Hinduism and Buddhism, religions that originated thousands of years ago in India, share lots of similarities. Both believe in ascetism, the idea of living simply and self-denial, as well as the idea that they could be free from suffering--- Hindus through Moksha and Buddhists through Nirvana. However, they also have notable differences. While Hindus had a strict social hierarchy in the form of the caste system, the Buddhists rejected the system and the power of the Brahmins. Similarly, Hindus had many complex rituals and ceremonies that only Brahmins could perform, while Buddhists rejected the idea of rituals and embraced self-enlightenment instead.
